Do you have to pay to park at the beach parking lots if you display a handicapped tag and must park in a regular spot because all the handicapped parking places are taken? Thanks

No. From a 2002 City source, and not changed AFAIK:

"Handicap parking is currently permitted free of charge at A, A/B, B and all
paid parking lots."

Do out of state handicapped permits apply?

CT is correct on all counts - the law on handicapped parking has not changed.

Of course, Sanibel's parking enforcement folk most certainly would take an extremely dim view of a car parked with a tag when ALL occupants started running down a beach access path carrying coolers and boogie boards. (I actually saw this a few years ago, but didn't have my cell phone with me!)

I thought only property owners could park in A areas?

What a time to be without CT. Confused Few things irritate me more than someone abusing the tag.

Shellcrazy - A valid handicap sticker, hangtag or license plate allows free parking at any area.

Be aware that on occassion, the PD has been known to check that the person the tag was issued to is actually with the group. Too many have come to visit and borrowed the car/tag.

That is very low to "borrow" a handicap person's vehicle or tag just to get free parking. Sad

Can I park along a residential street and access the beach that way, legally? Like West Gulf Beach?

No. You can ONLY park legally where indicated on the map you can download here:

Here's a no-no list:

Full time residents of Sanibel can apply for an A sticker, whether they own or rent. You need to show a drivers license with a Sanibel address (or similar proof of residency).

I believe non-resident property owners can now apply for B stickers, but I'm not sure of that.

Covered in this thread, Scott:

BTW, non-resident property owners now get an A sticker; we always could get B stickers.
